First there was the iPhone. Next came push email. Then, 3.0 arrived with push notifications. Now available, for one of the first
times in the App Store, there is Push RSS from Z|NET Development. RSS is a feature provided
by web sites to provide you with the latest news and information. RSS Viewer is an application that pushes those latest
updates directly to your device while also providing an aggregated view of news from all your favorite subscribed sites.
Now you can be the first to know about news and no longer have to visit several different sites. Simply download and
install the RSS Viewer application today!
RSS Viewer (Push)
RSS Viewer provides several features that make reading news faster, easier, and more enjoyable. Once the application is launched, a status screen appears and RSS Viewer immediately goes to work to fetch your latest content. As all data is stored and aggregated by us, we can quickly push down content to your device without relying on other sites. As a result, you get a streamlined and consistent experience throughout the application. Further, using the simple user interface within the device, you can get access to all your news and content without all of the advertisements and content that typically slow sites down. We show only the content you are interested in and most important it is provided ad-free! No longer do you have to sit and wait while content is loaded in a web page. Simply add the feed to RSS Viewer and let us do everything for you!
Push Notifications
In one of the firsts of its kind, RSS Viewer brings to you Push RSS. Using the power of iPhone OS 3.0,
push notifications allows us to send you notifications whenever new items are available. From there you can
simply click View to view the article within RSS Viewer. No longer are you required to open an application and
wait for it to load to know when news is available. You will always be up to date and be the first to know.
RSS Viewer provides push notifications in the following three ways.
- Alert message is shown with the title of the article allowing you to either view the article or close the alert. If multiple updates are found, then the number of updates are shown rather than the title.
- Sound or vibration is played according to your phone settings so that you can know that a new update has arrived (similar to email) without having to constantly turn on your device to check.
- Badge support on the icon lists the number of new items that are available for viewing since last logging in.
Recent Feeds
RSS Viewer provides a list of all recent feeds. The feeds use the favorites icon from the site, if available, so that you can quickly determine the source of an article. We cache all retrieved data locally so that you can get access to previously accessed content as quickly as possible. We then download the most recent data in the background. Once available, we highlight new items and provide a counter badge on the recents tab so that you can see how many new articles are available for reading. Initially, the last 25 available stories are shown. Want to view older data? Simply click on the last row to load more data.
My Feeds
RSS Viewer allows you to add any number of feeds. We support both RSS 1.x and 2.x feeds as well as Atom feeds There are four ways to add a feed: 1. Enter the address to the main site you are interested in such as http://www.znetdevelopment.com. We will automatically search the site's home page to find any available RSS feeds that you may then add. 2. Enter the URL directly to the RSS feed. 3. Search for a feed by its title or description. Simply type a few keywords and click Search and we will attempt to find feeds that match your request. 4. Click the Popular tab to view the most popular feeds. Those feeds may then be added to your feeds.
Once you have added your feeds, you can re-order them so your most important feeds are listed first. Then, simply click on any feed to view a list of its recent articles. This allows you to view feeds directly rather than using the Recent Feeds view.
Articles
Find an article you are interested in reading? Simply click on it and the embedded Safari browser will show the snippet of the article. As only a snippet is shown, you only view the content most important without having to sit and wait for an entire site to download. However, when you want to read more, simply click the title and the entire article will be presented on the actual site. Most importantly, everything is done without leaving the application!
Much, Much More
Version 1.0 is just the beginning of improving your news productivity. We are constantly hard at work on
improving the application including the following upcoming features:
- Category support will allow feeds to be organized into categories so that you can view your news by similar categories. For example, you can group all technology feeds together and all world news together.
- Offline support will allow you to login and download all content locally for later offline viewing. This will allow you to read your news later when network access is not available.
- Favorites will allow you to mark feeds as favorites so that you can save the article and view later on.
- Share this will allow you to share articles with other users and sites (Facebook, Digg, etc).
- Dynamic feeds will allow you to create feeds based purely on keywords so that you get access to matching news regardless of the site!
- Google Reader synchronization will automatically synchronize your feeds to and from RSS Viewer
- Friends support will allow you to share feeds and articles with your friends as well as view your friends' feeds
